Magnetic card is a kind of magnetic recording medium card. Made of high-strength and high-temperature resistant plastic or paper-wrapped plastic, it is moisture-proof, wear-resistant, flexible, convenient to carry and stable and reliable to use. Usually, one side of the magnetic card is printed with explanatory information, such as the direction of card insertion; A magnetic layer or stripe with 2-3 tracks on the other side to record relevant information and data.

The magnetic card takes liquid magnetic material or magnetic stripe as the information carrier, and the liquid magnetic material is coated on the card or the magnetic stripe is pressed on the card, and the width is about 6-14 mm. There are three tracks on the magnetic stripe. The first two tracks are read-only tracks, and the third track is read-write track, such as recording book balance. Magnetic cards are relatively simple, easy to read and write information, easy to use and low in cost, so they developed earlier and entered many application fields, such as telephone prepaid cards, debit cards, reservation cards, tickets, savings cards, credit cards and so on.

Credit card is a typical application of magnetic card. In developed countries, financial transaction cards have been widely used since 1960s. Among them, the United States is the birthplace of credit cards; Japan pioneered ATM with magnetic card to withdraw cash and automatic ticket checking machine with magnetic card monthly ticket. 1972 Japan formulated a unified specification for magnetic cards, and 1979 formulated Japanese standards JIS-B-9560 and 956 1 for credit card magnetic stripe access. The International Organization for Standardization has also formulated corresponding standards.
