Pre-authorization refers to the confirmation permission of the card issuer or its agency to freeze the limit before requesting payment from the special merchant.

Generally, when you make a purchase in a hotel or car rental, for the sake of insurance, the merchant will estimate the amount of consumption based on your request and freeze part of the money in your credit card (including the credit limit) as a deposit before you check out. And after the consumption is completed, swipe the card again for actual settlement, and then cancel the pre-authorization after settlement (usually it is automatically canceled after 30 days).
