Introduction to money and credit cards for British immigrants

#UK IMMIGRATION# Introduction After immigrating to the UK, what are the daily expenses? This is something closely related to life, and everyone must understand it. Next, I will introduce to you the currencies and credit cards used by British immigrants. Welcome to read!

Currency

The British currency is the pound (£), and 1 pound is equal to 100 pence (p). There are no exchange controls in the UK, so you can bring any amount of cash in and out of the country. Scotland has its own pound banknotes, which have the same denomination as banknotes in the rest of the UK and can be used anywhere in the UK, but generally other parties are reluctant to accept Scottish banknotes. Scottish £1 notes cannot be used outside Scotland.

Compared with carrying large amounts of cash, travellers’ checks are the safest way, but some places do not accept travellers’ checks. Keep your traveler's check receipts separate from the checks themselves. This makes it easier to get a refund if your check is lost or stolen. Some major banks can cash travelers checks free of charge to the account holder of the check. When you change money, exchange it for a smaller denomination so it's easier to use.

Tipping

In the UK, it is generally necessary to tip taxi drivers and restaurant waiters. The tip is usually 10 to 15. Many restaurants automatically add a service charge to the bill, so check the bill before deciding whether to tip. Tipping is not required when purchasing a drink at a tavern or bar.

Tax-free (VAT) shopping

Most goods and services sold in the UK are subject to Value-Added Tax (VAT), with the exception of food, books and children's clothing. VAT is usually included in the list price. Visitors arriving from outside the EU and staying in the UK for less than three months can claim a VAT refund. Please bring your passport with you when shopping. When purchasing goods, you must fill out a form in the store and give a copy to customs when leaving the country. You may be asked to show your purchase as proof of purchase. If you entrust the store to send the goods, the VAT should be deducted before you pay.

Credit cards

Credit cards are very commonly used in the UK. In fact, a credit card is required when renting a car and booking certain hotels. But many small shops, hotels, markets and cafes may not accept credit cards or have minimum spend requirements, so be sure to ask before buying. Accepted cards are usually posted on the store window. The UK uses a "chip and PIN" system rather than a signature system. You will need a four-digit PIN, so ask your bank before leaving the country.

You can use your credit card to withdraw cash at any bank or ATM with the corresponding card type logo, but it must be within the allowed limit. The credit card company may charge you interest on the cash withdrawal, which will appear on your statement along with the amount pre-withdrawn. You may also need to pay a currency conversion fee.
