Establishment and Development of Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences
Institute of Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences was established in June 1986. Formerly known as the Biotechnology Research Center, it was renamed the Biotechnology Research Institute with the approval of the Central Organizing Committee in June 1999. At present, it is the only state-level non-profit scientific research institution in China that focuses on the frontier basic and applied basic research of agricultural biotechnology. The key open laboratory of crop molecular biology in our college is an important research and development base in the field of agricultural biotechnology in China. With an experimental area of 7,000 square meters and an experimental greenhouse of 1.200 square meters, the Institute has established field demonstration bases in Sanya, Hainan, Pinggu, Beijing and Langfang, Hebei, providing important hardware support for large-scale transformation of functional genes, molecular breeding of crops, cultivation of new varieties and safety evaluation of genetically modified organisms.

There are 90 innovative posts in the Institute, and there are currently 78 in-service researchers, including China Academy of Engineering 1 person, researcher 15 person and 32 associate researchers. Doctoral tutor 1 1 person, 22 master tutor; Young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national level 1 person, 2 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions from the Ministry of Agriculture, and 2 candidates from the national "100 million talents project"; There are 2 first-class talents, 4 second-class talents and 6 third-class talents. Young and middle-aged researchers under the age of 45 account for 86% of the total number of scientific and technological personnel, and those with doctoral and master's degrees account for 68% of the total number of scientific and technological personnel, and have become an important backbone in the field of agricultural biotechnology in China.

Focusing on the country's demand for high-yield, high-quality, efficient and sustainable agricultural development, the institute aims at the forefront of international life sciences and biotechnology development, further expands its advantages in the research and development of genetically modified crops and recombinant microorganisms, forms characteristics in the frontier fields of plant metabolic engineering and microbial enzyme engineering, and adheres to the cross-integration of plants, microorganisms and related disciplines. Focus on plant genetic engineering, plant stress resistance molecular biology, plant nutritional metabolism and metabolic engineering, plant functional genomics, gene expression system and bioreactor, agricultural microbial genetic engineering, environmental microbial genetic engineering, and safety evaluation of agricultural genetically modified organisms.

During the Tenth Five-Year Plan period, the Institute undertook more than 863 National Plan, 973 National Plan, National Natural Science Foundation, national special research and industrialization of genetically modified plants, national key scientific and technological projects and international cooperation projects 100. He has obtained more than 30 national and provincial scientific and technological achievements, applied for 49 national invention patents (including 1 1 granted in China and 1 granted in China), published more than 600 papers in important academic journals at home and abroad, and published monographs 1 60. Great innovations and breakthroughs have been made in molecular breeding technology of transgenic insect-resistant three-line hybrid cotton, production of salmon calcitonin by rape oil body expression system, transgenic rice with Xa2 1 gene, transgenic corn with phytase gene, genetic engineering of glyphosate resistance, creation of rice mutants, agricultural microbial agents, and molecular biology of plant stress resistance.

In recent years, the research institute has taken the industrialization of transgenic insect-resistant cotton and insect-resistant three-line hybrid cotton as the leader and microbial enzyme engineering products as the new growth point, actively explored new ways to promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and successively transferred more than ten scientific and technological achievements such as insect-resistant cotton, sweet protein, organophosphorus pesticide degrading enzyme and lactase.

The Institute actively broadened the channels of international cooperation, and gradually shifted the focus of foreign affairs from enhancing exchanges to exploring cooperation. It received visits and exchanges from experts and scholars from more than 30 countries, including the United States, Britain, France and Canada, so that researchers could keep abreast of the latest research progress and development trends in the field of international agricultural biotechnology.

As a state-level scientific research institution specializing in agricultural biotechnology research, Biotechnology Research Institute strives to build a domestic first-class and internationally renowned agricultural biotechnology research institute after 5- 10 years of efforts, become a national agricultural biotechnology science and technology innovation center, a science and technology industry incubation center, an international cooperation and exchange center and a talent training base, and make greater contributions to building an innovative country and a new socialist countryside.
