IFAD mainly provides preferential financial support for poverty reduction and agricultural development in developing countries, helps countries improve food security and promotes the realization of the Millennium Development Goals. From 1978 to 20 1 1 at the end of the year, IFAD invested a total of1294.5 billion US dollars in poor areas of developing countries, supporting 892 projects, benefiting 330 million rural poor people.

The grant is used for technical assistance and does not exceed 7.5% of the annual work plan. Loans are divided into three categories, namely:

Highly concessional loan, with service fee of 0.75% per year (0% before 1994) and loan term of 40 years (50 years before1994), including grace period of 10 year. Countries whose per capita GNP does not exceed $805 can use this kind of loan;

Moderate preferential loans, the annual interest rate is equivalent to 50% of the floating interest rate of other international financial institutions (currently 3.54%), and the loan period is 20 years, with a grace period of 5 years. Such loans are suitable for countries with per capita gross national product between 806- 1305 US dollars;

Ordinary loans, the annual interest rate is equivalent to 100% of the floating interest rate of other international financial institutions (now 7.07%), and the loan term is 15- 18 years, including a three-year grace period, which is suitable for developing countries with per capita GNP exceeding 1306 USD.

The loan projects involve nine areas, such as agricultural development, rural development, credit, irrigation, animal husbandry, fishery, resettlement, agricultural product storage, processing and sales, scientific research promotion and training, and focus on supporting rural poor women. Through low-interest loans and grants, IFAD cooperates with the government to formulate and fund plans and projects to help the rural poor overcome poverty. Since the establishment of 1978, IFAD has invested 149 billion USD in 954 projects and plans, benefiting about 430 million rural poor people.

The recipient governments and other sources of funds, including project participants, contributed US$ 654.38+03 billion, and multilateral, bilateral and other donor institutions invested about US$ 654.38+00 billion. This is a total investment of about $23 billion.

IFAD not only acts as a bank to solve the poverty problem, but also acts as a spokesman for the rural poor. Its multilateral foundation provides a natural global platform for discussing important policy issues affecting the lives of the rural poor and paying attention to the central role of rural development in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

In 20 13, Hamed Haidara, the new representative of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (FIDA) in Burundi, told the media that the International Fund for Agricultural Development would provide more support to Burundi, and the amount would increase from the previous1500,000 US dollars to 300 million US dollars.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development has four major projects in Burundi, mainly involving animal husbandry reconstruction, agriculture and youth employment in rural areas.
