Formerly known as Aurora College, it was founded by Father Ma in the former site of Xujiahui Observatory on February 27th, 1903. It was the first private university in modern China.
Aurora University, headed by a famous missionary university in modern China, once had the reputation of "Paris University of the East". It is the earliest school in China to carry out postgraduate education and award doctoral and master's degrees. It has the first museum in China, the "Aurora Museum" (the predecessor of Shanghai Natural Museum).
By 1947, Aurora University had medical schools, polytechnic schools, law schools, liberal arts schools, Aurora Women's College of Arts and Sciences, two affiliated middle schools and two advanced nursing schools.
School background
Aurora University was founded at the end of 19. Liang Qichao, who was ordered to handle the affairs of the translation publishing house at that time, invited Ma as the dean in July 1898. Ma suggested that the school should be located in Shanghai, and the mission of the French Jesuits in Xujiahui should be involved in school affairs. 1898 coup aborted this school-running plan.
