-What kind of organization is -IIHS?
Friends who often read articles in our technology and design channel must be familiar with IIHS. The Association was founded in 1959. Its full name is Highway Safety Insurance Association, which translates into American Highway Safety Insurance Association. It was originally founded by the three major insurance industry associations in the United States.
Now, IIHS is an independent, non-profit scientific and educational organization. Its research direction focuses on reducing road deaths, injuries and property losses in the United States. All its funds come from auto insurance companies and insurance associations. The higher the safety factor of the vehicle, the less likely the passengers in the vehicle are to be injured, and the less likely it is for the insurance company to make large compensation. Therefore, IIHS and the insurance companies behind it can be said to be the beneficiaries of the improvement of vehicle safety level.
The institution similar to IIHS in China is China Insurance Automobile Safety Index C-IASI, or CIRI for short. Similarly, they are all funded by insurance companies, and the test items and evaluation grades are quite similar.
Different from the well-known "five-star" evaluation system, IIHS adopts a "two-level reward system" to give TOP SAFETY PICK and TOP SAFETY PICK+ evaluation to vehicles with excellent test results, which also has its own unique side in test items.
Different from the well-known NCAP mechanism, "frontal 100% overlap area collision test" was not included in the IIHS test project, but was replaced by "frontal 50% overlap area collision test". IIHS believes that the "50% overlapping area" test requires higher vehicle structure, and the body parts are more likely to invade the passenger compartment, so the body must be able to effectively guide and manage the energy generated by the impact.
However, the test of "100% overlap area" has higher requirements for seat belts and airbags, because the deformation of the vehicle structure is smaller. Of course, I don't want to compare which testing institution is better here. At present, they are very successful testing and evaluation systems, which are promoting the improvement of vehicle safety.
-What are the requirements for obtaining the "202 1 Top Security Select or Top Security Select+"list?
There are two different standards for different honors of "the highest security level" and "the highest security level+". The main part is actually the same. The difference lies in the headlights. The "Top Safety Choice+"requires the standard headlamp to achieve a score of "good" or "excellent".
The evaluation standard of 202 1 is basically the same as last year, but the evaluation standard of vehicle safety by IIHS is improving every year, which will only become more and more difficult for car companies. Of course, chasing is good for consumers.

So which cars are in the list released this year? As the vehicle classification in the US market is not quite the same as ours, the following categories are only classified according to the US market. In these two lists, a total of 90 models were selected.
The Highway Safety Insurance Association awarded 49 models the highest safety+rating of "Best Safety Choice+",which was more than twice that of last year.
In addition, the 4 1 model was evaluated as the "best safety choice", bringing the total number of winners of 202 1 to 90,2021to 64.
Winning two awards means that these models have received a "good" evaluation in all six crashworthiness tests of IIHS. The winning model must have the function of vehicle collision avoidance, and the evaluation of the system, whether it is "vehicle-to-vehicle" or "vehicle-to-pedestrian", must be high or higher.
In addition, the headlights of the "Top safety award" award-winning models must have an "excellent" or "good" rating, but all models equipped with "excellent" or "good" rated headlights will receive a+"rating.
Among all automobile manufacturers, Hyundai Motor Group won the most awards in 20021year, among which 12 models won the evaluation of "Top Safety Selection" and five models won the evaluation of "Top Safety Selection+". Nine models of Volvo * * * have won the evaluation of "Top Safety PICK+", which is the most evaluated automobile manufacturer in this evaluation.
So far, Mitsubishi Motors has not won any awards. General Motors is the brand that has won the least number of awards on the award list, with only TOP SAFETY PICK and a TOP SAFETY PICK+.
Compared with last year's winners, the number of models has doubled this year, so what makes these models get better evaluation? After our research, we summarized the following two points:
Headlight improvement: the improvement of IIHS evaluation standard urges manufacturers to provide better headlights as standards.
In the United States, about half of fatal car accidents happen in the dark, and more than a quarter happen on roads without lighting. However, not all models come standard with the best lighting system. Due to different prices, expensive accessories are often provided, which leads to poor quality of headlights equipped with a large number of models.
Under the new headlamp test requirements, many automobile manufacturers responded quickly. Among the 202 1 tested 185 models, 85 models can be equipped with headlights rated as "excellent", of which 8 models are equipped with headlights rated as "excellent" as standard. Up to 202 1, * * * 42 models will be equipped with "qualified" or "acceptable" headlights.
Popularization of frontal anti-collision early warning system
Vehicles don't have to have anti-collision function as a standard to win these two awards, but under the "spur" of IIHS, 20 automobile brands signed a commitment: from 2022 to 23, at least 95% of vehicles will be equipped with automatic vehicle-to-vehicle emergency braking system.
Since 202 1, IIHS has been adopting a two-level reward system to meet the new requirements step by step, and gradually introduced the new collision test and collision avoidance standards used in "TOP SAFETY PICK+" into the requirements of the conventional "TOP SAFETY PICK" reward, so as to gradually guide automobile manufacturers to meet the updated rules and standards.
A slight increase in speed may have fatal consequences.
In addition to the above evaluation results, IIHS and AAA Traffic Safety Foundation released the research report "Moderate speed increase may cause fatal consequences".
All the tests conducted in Buffalo, new york, show that at the impact speed of 40 mph, the interference between drivers is minimal. However, at the impact speed of 50 mph, the driver's door will open and the dashboard and foot area will be obviously deformed.
At the speed of 56 mph, the interior of the vehicle was seriously damaged, and the sensor of the dummy recorded the possibility of serious neck injury and long bone fracture of the calf.
Not only that, when hitting at speeds of 50 and 56 mph, the upward movement of the steering wheel will cause the dummy's head to pass through the deployed airbag, resulting in the face hitting the steering wheel. The measurement results obtained from the dummy show that the risk of facial fracture and severe brain injury is very high.
