Mating can occur throughout the year. Hamsters live for about two years and have the ability to reproduce more than one month after birth. It is best to start mating at about two and a half to three months.
?Both females and males have multiple partners.
During the breeding season, female hamsters seek out male burrows.
During mating, a mating plug forms and seals the female's reproductive tract, preventing successful insemination by subsequent males.
Soon after mating, female hamsters often chase males away from their territory.

However, co-caging requires higher adaptability of hamsters to live in groups, and they are generally kept singly.
