Mating can occur throughout the year. Hamsters live for about two years and have the ability to reproduce more than one month after birth. It is best to start mating at about two and a half to three months.

During mating, a mating plug forms and seals the female's reproductive tract, preventing successful insemination by subsequent males.

Soon after mating, female hamsters often chase males away from their territory.
