The education center was formerly a "government experimental farm" built in 1960s and 1950s. 1986 was closed. 1987 the hong kong government has set aside 24 hectares of land nearby for the exclusive use of banana pits, and received a donation of $200,000 from the lions club international foundation (L.C.I.F) to build them. On February 27th, 199 1, the foundation stone was laid by William L. Bill Biggs, President of Lions International, and Dr. Li Xiyu, Director of Agriculture and Fisheries Department. On June 8, the same year, Sir David Wilson, then the governor, unveiled it.
Lions nature education centre, managed by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, organizes various nature education, field research and recreational activities for schools, public and private organizations and the general public to help protect the natural environment of Hong Kong.
