Extended information

In 1961, Andy Lau was born in Tai Heng Village, New Territories, Hong Kong. When he was 20 years old, Andy Lau's father believed that no matter how big the countryside is, it is just a small hill, and we should go outside to gain experience. So, he moved his family to Diamond Hill, a slum area, and opened a grocery store. This decision made his grandfather furious. When the family property was divided, he didn't leave any money to them. Andy Lau began to live as a poor man.

As soon as he entered elementary school, Andy Lau became a helper in the family grocery store. I get up in the dark at around 4 o'clock every day, help my family prepare breakfast, and carry a bucket to the well to fetch water. When I come back from school, the first thing I do is work. I get into the kitchen and wash the dishes. While other people's children were playing around, Andy Lau often washed dishes until his back ached. When I was 11 years old, a sudden fire broke out in my home, and everything was reduced to a handful of scorched earth.

1978 was a turning point in Andy Lau's fate. When 17-year-old Andy Lau heard that the wireless training class was recruiting people, he immediately signed up. After hearing this, the teacher waved his hands repeatedly, thinking that with Andy Lau's conditions, he should become an actor. Just like that, Andy Lau honestly went to take actor training courses again. With good performance, half of the 40 people admitted were eliminated, and he became one of the remaining ones.
