Lao Niu Foundation (formerly known as Niu Lao Public Welfare Development Promotion Association in Inner Mongolia) was established on February 28th, 2004. Niu Gensheng, a famous entrepreneur and philanthropist, is a non-public fundraising foundation engaged in social charity activities. The registration authority of Niu Lao Foundation is the Civil Affairs Department of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and the competent business unit is the Financial Work Office of the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Lao Niu Foundation aims at "developing public welfare undertakings and building a harmonious society", and its main business activities are oriented to environmental protection, culture and education, medical and health care, agriculture, rural areas and farmers, disaster relief and other charities.
On June 5438+ 10, 2005, Mr Niu and his family donated all the shares of Mengniu Dairy, and agreed that in his lifetime, 5 1% of the dividends of these shares would be owned by Lao Niu Foundation and 49% by individuals (actually, 67% by Lao Niu Foundation and 33% by individuals); After the second year, the dividend 100% of these shares goes to the Lao Niu Foundation, and the family members only receive living expenses equivalent to the average wages in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. Mr. Niu has an idea: "from scratch, it is a small pleasure to satisfy individuals;" It is a great pleasure to give back to the society from scratch. Mr. Niu is the first person in the world to donate all his shares, so he is known as the "first person in the world to donate shares". The market value of the shares donated by Niu Gensheng to Lao Niu Foundation is about HK$ 4.5 billion, and most of them still exist in the form of shares, with HK$ 955 million realized. Inspired by its charitable behavior, 14 executives of Mengniu Dairy Entrepreneurship Team decided to donate 70% (about 300 million yuan) of foreign shareholders' bonus shares to social charity.
Adhering to Mr. Niu's philosophy, under the guidance of the Financial Work Office and the Civil Affairs Department of the People's Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the Association actively and regularly carries out various social charity activities. By the end of 2009, The Association will provide assistance to China Red Cross Society, China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation, China Medical and Health Development Foundation, China Children's Hearing Foundation, China Social Workers Association, China Siyuan Poverty Alleviation Project Foundation, China National Culture Promotion Association, Li Ka-shing Foundation, Jet Li One Foundation, Peking University, Inner Mongolia Poverty Alleviation Office, Inner Mongolia Charity Federation, Inner Mongolia Youth Development Foundation, Inner Mongolia Farmers and Herdsmen Painting and Calligraphy Research Association, Inner Mongolia Poverty Alleviation Association, Inner Mongolia Student Federation, More than 50 charitable projects, including the Red Cross Society of Hohhot, the Association for Poverty Alleviation and Development of Hohhot, the Emergency Command Center of Hohhot 120, and the Civil Affairs Bureau of Helinger County, donated about1300,000 yuan.
With the state's attention and standardization of folk charity, the foundation will continue to grow and make its own efforts for the development of social charity in China. As far as we know, there are more than 56,000 foundations in the United States, with total assets of nearly 500 billion US dollars (1 US dollar is about RMB 8.2 yuan), of which independent private foundations account for about 85% and enterprise foundations account for about 5%, both of which account for more than 90% in number and total assets, and both belong to the category of "non-public offering foundations"; The sum of the total number and assets of community foundations and operating foundations that raise funds for the public is less than 10%. There is no doubt that private foundations occupy an absolute dominant position in the United States, and almost all large foundations are private foundations.
Can it be inferred that the most powerful foundation in China in the future will also be a private non-public offering foundation? The situation in China is that there are more than 2 million private enterprises, one thousandth of which is 2,000. However, the capital threshold for the establishment is not high, and it is easy for a slightly larger enterprise to do so. Therefore, I believe that in a short period of time, we can see the emergence of a large number of non-public foundations, and the resulting prosperity of China foundation and the vigorous development of non-governmental public welfare undertakings.
