School History In July 1952, according to the national higher industrial school department adjustment plan, the Central Ministry of Education decided to establish East China Institute of Chemical Technology; on August 11 of the same year, a symposium on the establishment of the school was held in the conference room of the Higher Education Department of the East China Military and Political Commission.

It was decided that the school should be named "East China Institute of Chemical Technology", which was formed by the merger of the chemical engineering departments of five universities: Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Datong University, Soochow University, and Jiangnan University. The school is located at No. 195 Zhengfa Road, Jiangwan, Shanghai.

On January 20, 1953, the Party Working Committee of Colleges and Universities of the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China approved the establishment of the Party Committee of East China University of Chemical Technology; in March of the same year, the school began to build a new Meilong campus.

In August 1954, the school's new campus in Meilong was completed and put into use; on the 28th of the same month, the school handed over all the campus buildings north of Handan Road to Fudan University, and all the land and properties on Zhengfa Road and Guoquan Road were handed over to Shanghai Municipality

On December 26, 1969, with the approval of the State Council, the school was placed under the leadership of Shanghai Municipal Government; on the same day, the school held a revolutionary class for petrochemical engineering education.

In April 1972, the school began to recruit workers, peasants and soldiers from all over the country.

In August, following the decision of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, the school was renamed Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology.

On December 4, the school restored its party committee system.

In the same year, the Southwest Branch of East China Institute of Chemical Technology was renamed Sichuan Branch of Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology.

In October 1976, the school resumed enrollment and teaching, and all work was back on track.

In July 1979, with the approval of the State Council, the Sichuan Branch of Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology was closed, and the original school site was renamed Sichuan Institute of Chemical Technology. In August 1980, the Ministry of Education approved the school to restore its original name of East China Institute of Chemical Technology.

In June 1996, the school entered the national "211 Project" key construction ranks.
