The School of Food Science and Engineering of Harbin Institute of Technology was founded in December 2005, formerly known as the Institute of Food Science and Genetic Engineering of Harbin Institute of Technology.

The college consists of the Department of Food Science, the Department of Food Engineering, the Department of Biochemical Engineering, the Food Safety Research Center, and the Sino-French International Dairy Science and Technology Laboratory (HIT-INRA). The National Light Industry Beet Sugar Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, the Heilongjiang Provincial Sugar Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Station, and the National Beet Sugar Industry Standardization Center are affiliated with our institute. In December 2005, the "Sino-French Dairy Institute" was jointly established with the institute as the main body and the French National Institute of Agricultural Sciences. "Chinese Beet Sugar Industry", edited and published by our institute, is the only Chinese core science and technology journal of the beet sugar industry in my country that is published to the outside world. "Bioinformatics" is a Chinese core science and technology journal that has been published to the outside world since 2004.
