Guan Songtao's Character Career
Before the founding of New China, neurosurgery in China was almost blank. In the early 1930s, Guan Songtao in Beijing and Zhang Charlie in Shenyang were the first doctors to perform neurosurgery in China. 1932, Guan Songtao published the first monograph on neurosurgery in English version of Chinese Medical Journal. In addition to the above two people, Zhang Tonghe of Xi also tried frontal lobectomy to treat mental illness. Another respected pioneer of neurosurgery in China is Yih-Chang Chao. Yih-Chang Chao graduated from Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) in 1934, and went to the Montreal Institute of Neurology in 1938 to study under the famous neurosurgeon Panfield. From 1940, Yih-Chang Chao, who returned to China, worked with Guan Songtao in Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Until the end of 1942, the Japanese army launched the Pacific War and occupied Beijing. Guan Songtao continued to work in Beijing Zhonghe Hospital and 1949 went to the United States. After the founding of New China, Yih-Chang Chao came to Tianjin and trained many neurosurgeons, making outstanding contributions to the development of modern neurosurgery in China.

Brief introduction of Mr. Guan Songtao and his family

Mr. Guan Songtao was born in a family of western medicine since childhood. Grandpa Guan Yuanchang is a famous dentist in Hong Kong. When Sun Yat-sen was studying at the Hong Kong College of Western Medicine (the predecessor of the Medical College of Hong Kong University), he was closely related to the son of Guan Yuanchang (uncle Guan Songtao), and Mr. Guan Yuanchang was even recognized as an adoptive father by Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

Among them, Guan Songtao's father, Guan Jingxian, graduated from Beiyang Western Medicine Museum, held a high position in the Manchu government and the National Government, and once lived among the doctors of Empress Dowager Cixi.

According to Guan Jia's genealogy, "there are more than 30 western doctors in the following five generations since Dean Guan", which is called China's "Family of Western Doctors".

Although the foundation of this family is to help the world, in the modern history of China, it was Ji Tai Engineering Office, the largest architectural firm in modern China founded by Mr. Guan Songsheng, that made this family famous.

Mr. Guan Songsheng studied in Tsinghua Preparatory School for Studying in the United States, then went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States, and obtained a bachelor's degree in architecture at 19 17. In the same year, he entered Harvard University to study municipal management. When studying in the United States, Guan Songsheng and Song Ziwen were classmates and had close contacts. Brother Wu Guan was a classmate in Nankai Middle School. Later, he studied architecture in the United States and joined Kitai after returning to China. These rich social relations and resources accumulated in the early years laid a solid foundation for the start and development of Ji Tai Engineering Division in China.

Compared with his brother's social contribution and the reputation he brought to his family when he established Ji Tai, Mr. Guan Songtao still inherited the family heirloom in the field of western medicine.

Guan Songtao is the first graduate of Peking Union Medical College. At that time, the Rockefeller Foundation founded the Union Medical College, aiming at cultivating potential male and female students and making them independent doctors, teachers and scientists. Therefore, the requirements for academic qualifications are very strict, and it is famous for the elimination system-'If you fail one exam, you have to retake it, and if you fail two exams, you have to be swept out of the house. To this end, the day you step into the door of Concorde is the time when you study hard at the cold window. After graduating from Concord, he studied in the United States and worked in Concord Hospital after returning home. At that time, the famous doctors of Concord were Yuanfu Xie, Zhong Huilan and Meng Jimao.

He also served as the surgical director of Peking University Hospital, the first hospital in China. At that time, surgery existed as a whole, without subdivision. At that time, China was in the historical stage of frequent wars. However, under the conditions at that time, Director Guan Songtao took the lead in carrying out craniotomy in general surgery and neurosurgery.

From 65438 to 0940, Yih-Chang Chao, who returned to China, worked with Guan Songtao in Peking Union Medical College Hospital.

According to an interview with Li Xueqin, a professor of Tsinghua History Department by Phoenix Satellite TV, Mr. Guan Songtao was a very famous doctor at that time, and he was the seventh doctor in the world who could perform craniotomy. Mr. Li Xueqin's father used to work in Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and he very much hoped that he could become a famous doctor like Mr. Guan Songtao.

In his memoirs, Li Ao also described his experience of suffering from chronic appendicitis when he was six years old. He invited Mr. Guan Songtao, then director of surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, to operate on him. According to records, Mr Guan was the first famous doctor in China at that time. When doctors have a physical examination in the future, they will all praise him for his good medical skills and high medical ethics when they hear that the operation was performed by Mr. Guan Songtao. This shows the position of Mr. Guan Songtao in the field of western medicine in China.

At the end of 1942, Japan launched the Pacific War, and the Union Medical College Hospital with American background was dissolved. Guan and several other graduates from Union Medical College, (kala-azar experts) and (radiology experts) took over the original central hospital and renamed it Zhonghe Hospital.

Mr. Guan Songtao was the president of Beiping Medical Association.

1949, Guan Songtao went to settle in the United States. He lived in Berkeley, California, USA in his later years. On the other side of the ocean, he is still respected and admired by people in western medicine.
