Northlands Mall Champion
Today, various competitions are held in different shopping malls in Christchurch, including talent quests. At one point, Hayley decided to enter a talent competition in the hope of being the best at it. Jill helped her choose appropriate songs, hoping to find a song that highlighted Hayley's natural voice. Of course, the two mothers and daughters sometimes had different opinions, but her parents were always present when Hayley performed. This performance was a bit unexpected. Hayley sang the first part in the wrong key and seemed a bit at a loss. However, the clever Hayley corrected it when singing the second part. But unfortunately, Hayley did not qualify for the semi-finals. Jill was not convinced that Hayley's beautiful singing voice was a natural talent and often asked other people for their opinions. A big problem with Hayley's performance was that she performed so perfectly that the judges may not realize how hard she put her heart into it, but Hayley gradually learned how to please the audience. After each game, their family will have a post-game review. After competing for two years, Hayley finally won the Northlands Mall competition singing Mists of Islay.
Recording "Walking in the Air"
'At the age of 12, Hayley went to a professional recording studio to record "Walking in the Air". This is a commemorative record distributed to family and friends. Only 1,000 copies were made (now a priceless collector's item among Hailey fans).
Singing on the streets
After recording that record, Hayley and her sister went to sing on the streets of Christchurch. Hayley was still in intermediate school when she first performed on the streets. She sang at the Christchurch Arts Centre, but because she had no money to buy lunch, she took to the streets to sell her songs. Since then, she and her sister have been singing on the streets every weekend. Christchurch is the singing capital of New Zealand, with people from all over the world gathering every day. Singing is hard work because there is no guarantee that there will be an audience or that anyone will stop to watch, but Hayley performed so well that passers-by watched and marveled that such a small body could produce such a powerful voice. Singing taught Hayley what to pay attention to when performing, but there was one thing she didn't need to learn, and that was confidence. Many of the songs she sang during the concert were chosen by her mother. Although Jill was a little worried that people would think she was asking Hayley to make money, she felt that the most important thing was that she was there to cheer Hayley up. If Hayley had never been singing on the streets, Hayley wouldn't be the Hayley she is today.
"Walking in the Air" global attention
Hayley once sent Walking in the Air to different record companies, but there was no response. However, Gray Bartlett MBE, who has listened to Hayley's recordings, believes that Hayley's talents are rare in ten years. He called 60 Minutes reporter Mike Valintine and asked him to listen to Walking in the Air. After listening, Valintine agreed to do an exclusive interview for Hayley. The impact of this fifteen-minute interview on Hayley cannot be ignored. Bartlett arranged for Hayley to meet with Universal Records executive Grant Kearney in Sydney. Kearney said Hayley's recording would interfere with her studies. He also expressed his appreciation for Hayley's singing.
Everyone at Universal Records also expressed their love for Hayley's singing. When releasing a record, one of the plans was to use Walking in the Air as a basis to improve the sound quality. However, this was technically and legally difficult to achieve, so a brand new record needed to be recorded. Hayley remastered some of the songs and also recorded a Maori version of God Defend New Zealand. Hayley felt reassured to have expert help, and the photographer said that Hayley was very photogenic, which also made Hayley very happy. For the music industry, of course, the first officially released record should have the same name as the singer, so this record is called Hayley Westenra. The record was also released in time for Mother's Day, hoping to attract the attention of mothers and children. . The 60 Minutes interview aired a week after the record's release, and people rushed to get their hands on Hayley's record, which had already sold forty-five thousand copies in its first two weeks.
