The patent application number standard was promulgated on July 14, 2003 and officially came into effect on October 1. The revised new patent application number is represented by internationally accepted 12-digit Arabic numerals, including three parts: application year number, application type number and application serial number. In order from left to right, the 1st to 4th digits indicate the year in which the patent application was accepted, the 5th digit indicates the type of patent application, and the 6th to 12th digits (***7 digits) are the application serial number. Indicates the relative order in which patent applications are accepted. Each Arabic numeral used in the patent application number is decimal, and the year number in the application number adopts the AD era. In the next 20 years, there will be a phenomenon of new and old application numbers coexisting. Invention patent applications, utility model patent applications and design patent applications with a patent application date of October 1, 2003 or after this date will all be given and use new patent application numbers in accordance with the new patent application number standards. Patent application numbers assigned before September 30, 2003 (inclusive) will not be upgraded or replaced after October 1, 2003, and the original patent application numbers will continue to be used in various statutory procedures stipulated in the Patent Law.

Only when the patent application is granted patent rights, the patent application number becomes a patent number.
