China ranked 17th in the 2018 Global Innovation Index. The top ten countries in the 2018 Global Innovation Index are: Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Singapore, the United States, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Ireland.
In the 2019 Global Innovation Index, Switzerland topped the list, followed by Sweden, the United States, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, etc. Among the top performers in Asia are Singapore (8th), Israel (10th), South Korea (11th) and Hong Kong, China (13th). China ranked 14th, entering the top 15 for the first time.
The "2019 Global Innovation Index Report" released on July 24, 2019 shows that China's ranking continues to rise, from seventeenth in 2018 to fourteenth in 2019. The "Report" shows that China is still the only country among the middle-income economies that ranks among the top 30. It has demonstrated obvious innovation strength in many fields, including the number of domestic patents, the number of domestic industrial designs, and the number of domestic trademarks. As well as in terms of net high-tech exports and exports of creative products, China ranks at the forefront.
In terms of innovation input and output, China performs outstandingly. Its innovation output is comparable to Germany, the United Kingdom, Finland, Israel, and the United States, but its input level is far lower than these countries. The report also introduces the latest ranking of the world's largest science and technology clusters, with the United States, China and Germany occupying the top three science and technology clusters.
