For Apple To put it simply, iPhone
On this model, we see Apple adopting a full-screen design with bangs for the first time and introducing the Face ID (facial recognition) function, bringing a new product experience to users. That is to say, starting from the iPhone X generation, subsequent digital series models all use notch screens.
However, the vast majority of users on the market do not like "notches". They hope that Apple can launch a "true full-screen" iPhone without notches, punch holes, and water droplets. And almost every year you can see breaking news about notchless iPhone on the Internet, but most of them come from netizens YY. Now, the latest news about the notch-less iPhone has appeared on the Internet.
The latest report released by Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shows that Apple will abandon the notch screen in 2022 and switch to a centered hole-punch screen. If the news is true, it means that this year’s new iPhone may still use a notch screen, and next year it will use a centered punch screen. In other words, Apple may not launch a true notch-less iPhone in the next two years.
The notchless iPhone in users' minds is a complete screen on the front of the fuselage. Although the front lens is not visible on the surface, it still has the front camera function. Of course, it is not an iPhone with a pop-up front lens, but an under-screen camera. The overall appearance is the same as the rendering below.
According to rumors, Apple will launch a new iPhone with a centered hole-punch screen next year, which theoretically cancels the notch design, but there is still a certain gap between this and the user's ideal notch-less iPhone.
Compared with the notch screen, the hole-punch screen does have a higher screen-to-body ratio, but there are still areas of incomplete display on the screen. Especially when playing games or watching movies, this hole-punch screen will make you The more I looked at it, the more uncomfortable I felt.
When it comes to the centered hole-punch screen, Samsung can be said to be the "originator" of this full-screen solution. Samsung launched the first Galaxy Note 10 with a centered hole-punch screen in August 2019. Since then, both the Galaxy S series and Galaxy Note series have continued to use this design.
Excluding the lifting structure, the centered hole-punch screen should be the current full-screen solution with the least impact on the screen display area.
In the middle of last year, Visionox released the world's first under-screen camera solution, and ZTE AXON 20 5G became the first commercial model on the market equipped with this solution. In February this year, at the MWC 2021 exhibition, ZTE brought its second-generation mass-produced under-screen camera solution and under-screen 3D structured light technology.
Similar to Apple’s Face ID, ZTE’s under-screen 3D structured light can also realize 3D modeling of living objects. I don’t know how it will be used in practice. From a technical point of view, it is not impossible to move the components inside the iPhone notch to the bottom of the screen.
According to the AXON 20 5G under-screen camera sample released by ZTE, the imaging effect of portrait selfies is similar to that of ordinary front-facing cameras, except that a certain fog effect can be seen, and in complex light environments There is a certain glare problem, but the overall image quality has reached a usable level.
It is still unclear whether the actual imaging effect of the second-generation under-screen camera will be significantly improved compared to the previous generation. Considering that the under-screen camera solution is not yet that mature, Apple may not launch an iPhone equipped with this technology so soon.
Previously, the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) announced a new Apple patent. The patent information shows that Apple’s latest under-screen 3D depth sensor solution not only realizes under-screen Face ID, but also has the potential to Eliminate iPhone notch.
As can be seen from the patent diagram, this solution can place photoelectric sensors such as biometric sensors, cameras, and depth sensors under the screen. According to the patent description, the photoelectric sensor array has a depth detector that can generate 3D images, which can not only detect fingerprints, but also perform 3D facial scanning and retinal scanning.
To put it simply, through this solution, the iPhone can achieve under-screen Face ID and under-screen fingerprint recognition.
In fact, the main reason why Apple launched the iPhone with a centered hole-punch screen may be because there are still many difficulties in under-screen camera technology that need to be overcome. Previously, domestic mobile phone manufacturers such as OPPO and Xiaomi have demonstrated under-screen camera technology. Judging from the display results, the biggest problem with this technology is how to ensure that the image information obtained by the sensor is not distorted.
The imaging principle of current cameras is basically to capture light through the image sensor. If it is made into an under-screen camera, the screen above the image sensor cannot be made completely transparent, because the screen is also used to display content. Therefore, part of the light will be blocked, thereby affecting the image quality of the front camera under the screen.
In addition, the under-screen camera will cause problems such as color spots and chromatic aberration in the screen area. When viewed at close range, it is easy for the human eye to distinguish. In addition, the cost of new technologies is relatively high, so mainstream mobile phones No manufacturer has launched a mass-produced under-screen camera phone.
Compared with under-screen cameras, under-screen Face ID technology is not that difficult, because Apple’s Face ID only requires part of the infrared light to penetrate the screen. Before Apple solves the problem of under-screen cameras, the use of a centered hole-punch screen may be for technological transition, because only in this way can the imaging quality of the front camera be guaranteed, and the size of the bangs can be reduced while enabling under-screen Face ID. .
Although Apple does not build prototypes to demonstrate under-screen camera technology like domestic mobile phone manufacturers do, this does not mean that Apple does not have corresponding technical solutions, but it has not been made public. Without sacrificing the image quality of the front camera and Face ID, if Apple takes the lead in launching a notch-less iPhone, mobile phone sales will surely increase significantly.
On the contrary, if domestic mobile phone manufacturers successfully solve the problem of under-screen cameras and launch commercial models, Apple can also learn from its friends. After all, Cook previously said that there are many sources of feature inspiration on the iPhone. In China, as long as the user experience of the product can be improved, being the first one does not seem to be that important.
