Gathering in Kaifeng Bookstore Street

At the south end of Bookstore Street, there is a blue-grey Qing Dynasty building with a sculpture of "The Birthday Star Holding Peach" directly above the door. The old birthday star is wearing a yellow robe and a white beard, and he looks as if he is walking on the wall. This old store was founded during the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty. The owner once did business in Jincheng and Yangcheng, Shanxi Province, and later went to Kaifeng to open this store, named "Jinyang Yu". It mainly sells fruits and groceries. It was also converted into a pastry workshop and the business was prosperous for a time. As time goes by and generations change, Jinyang Yu has irreversibly declined in the ups and downs of history, but this time-honored brand has been preserved and is now a bookstore.

Beside Jinyang Yu, there is a small building with gray walls and red columns, shaped like a church. The sculpture on the wall is the traditional Chinese character "trademark" held up by two ears of wheat, with colorful carvings of lotus flowers, lotus leaves and lotus roots on both sides. The colors are bright. Here is another famous time-honored brand "Bao Yaoji" on Bookstore Street. It was founded during the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty. The owner, Bao Yaoting, was originally a hawker who made a living by rolling baskets and selling pens. After making a fortune, he built this store. When his son took over the business, he switched to making pastries and became famous. Nowadays, it has long since lost its glory, and it is still running books. Bookstore Street is not just about bookstores, there are also restaurants, department stores, etc. Strangely, other industries have struggled to become big here. In addition to all kinds of books, hundreds of cultural products such as pens and papers, sports equipment, Chinese and foreign musical instruments, ancient and modern calligraphy and paintings are sold here, and most of the business is booming.

Bookstore Street is both an old street and a small street. Its total length is only 600 meters, but now it is home to more than 40 large and small bookstores and more than 100 cultural supplies stores. Although it has gone through hundreds of years of vicissitudes, it still maintains the cultural characteristics of bookstores and adheres to the streetscape of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is this persistence of personality that makes Bookstore Street unique among many old commercial streets, adding a lot of charm to this city that looks like thread-bound ancient books.
