Since ancient times, the olive tree has had a very close relationship with human life and development, and is considered a symbol of unity, peace and friendship. The people of Egypt, Greece, and ancient Rome deified it and compared it to the god of light and the god of heaven.
The culture of the olive tree influenced the development of Western civilization. Around the 15th century during the Age of Discovery, Spain, the maritime power at that time, used light sailing ships to carry the olive tree civilization to the New World, South Africa, Australia, America and China in the East. For Westerners, the olive tree is the best synonym for the tree of life, because it not only ignited Mediterranean civilization, but also brought a sense of happiness to taste, health and youth. It has been more than 40 years since China actually introduced and successfully cultivated and extracted olive oil. As early as 1963, Zhou En visited Albania and learned about the situation of olive oil in detail, and decided to introduce olive oil in China. On March 3, 1964, Zhou Enlai personally planted the first olive tree among these saplings at Haikou Forest Farm in Kunming City, Yunnan Province.
The introduction of olive oil in Wudu District, Longnan City, Gansu Province first began in 1975. Comrade Song Ping, then secretary of the Gansu Provincial Party Committee, personally advocated the introduction and trial cultivation of olive oil in Longnan, and successively introduced olive oil from Wuhan, Nanjing, Hanzhong and other places. More than 60,000 seedlings of more than 30 olive varieties have been introduced locally, and experimental cultivation has been carried out in more than 20 towns and villages along the Bailongjiang, Baishuijiang and Xihan River basins with an altitude of 700 to 1,300 meters.
In 1988, experts and professors such as Xu Weiying and Deng Mingquan of the Chinese Academy of Forestry, who were inspecting olives in Hanzhong, Shaanxi, accidentally discovered that the olives produced in Wudu were pressed in Hanzhong, which attracted the attention of experts. Experts were organized to carry out field investigations and demonstrations in Longnan for many times, and determined that the Chuanba Valley area and mid-mountain area below 1,300 meters above sea level along the Bailong River in Wudu are the best suitable areas for olive oil growth in the country. After investigation and verification, the climate characteristics and soil structure along the Bailong River in Wudu are very similar to those along the Mediterranean coast, showing the characteristics of "rain and heat in the same season", which is extremely beneficial to the growth of olive oil in summer; winter is also relatively warm; the soil is porous, It has high calcium content, loose soil, good air and water permeability, early fruit bearing, stable and high yield, and its fruit bearing rate and oil yield rate are almost the same as those of the place of origin.
In 1989, with the enthusiastic care of the central, provincial and municipal governments, especially Song Ping, it received the attention and support of the State Planning Commission, the National Agricultural Development Commission and the State Forestry Administration, and was listed as one of the national One of the three largest olive production bases in the country.
The development of China’s olive oil industry was initiated by Premier Zhou Enlai’s introduction and planting of the first olive sapling in 1964. As the best suitable area for Chinese olives, Wudu District in Longnan, Xiangyu As the leading brand of domestic olive oil and the successor of China's olive industry, in order to commemorate the late founder of the industry, the brand name "Xiangyu" adopts the homophony of "Xiangyu", the word "Xiangyu" that was used by Premier Zhou in his youth. "Xiangyu". Xiangyu's trademark graphic design adopts a symmetrical structure. The core part of the X-shape is four groups of olive branches and olive fruits blooming outward; the shape is a graphic composed of eight continuous small arcs, which contains the all-round meaning of Xiangyu's business.
Wudu District of Longnan City strongly supports olives as a characteristic pillar industry. After 19 years of unremitting efforts, Wudu District of Longnan City has become the largest olive planting base in the country. Olive oil in Longnan has entered the track of scientific, large-scale and industrialization. Olive oil has become Longnan’s characteristic industry of “I have what others don’t have, and I have the best when others have it”. Three high-tech demonstration parks have been built, with an olive planting area of ??160,000 acres in the city and an annual output of more than 1,200 tons of fresh olive fruits. It is hoped that the planting area will reach 300,000 acres by the end of the Eleventh Five-Year Plan. Longnan, Gansu Province has become a veritable hometown of Chinese olive oil. Now Gansu Province Longnan olive oil has obtained the special mark of "Geographical Indication Product Protection" issued by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China. This means that Gansu Province Longnan olive oil, known as the "Queen of Vegetable Oils", has a national-level "protective umbrella". This also opens up broad prospects for the development of the olive industry in Longnan.
