Creative background:

Li Baiyao has written court poems like "Fenghe's Early Spring Travel in Response to Orders", but this "Reminiscing on the Road" is not the same as the entire creation of court poems. On the contrary, Li Baiyao inserted into the poem two historical precedents similar to his situation, Cai Yong's exile and Cui Xiang's conferment of a humble position in the northeast by Dou Xian. Both of them were scholars of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Legend has it that Hengyang is the end point of the wild geese’s journey south.

Compared with Wei Zheng's "Recounting Memories", both poems end with the affirmation of principles and moral determination. Li Baiyao said: A husband has his own ambitions, and would rather harm an official than do it unfairly; Wei Zheng said: Life is a matter of spirit, and no one can comment on fame.
