The original inventor of this globally popular logo was Harvey Ball, an American public relations company employee, but luck did not befall him. In 1963, he drew the first "yellow smiley" pattern for an insurance company client, earning only $45. This is also the only income that "Yellow Smiley" has brought him.

The people who made the "yellow smiley face" "famous" and became rich because of it were the Speihn brothers. They opened a novelty store, trademarked the "yellow smiley" design, and printed the logo on every item in the store, along with the slogan "Have a nice day."

The "yellow smiley face" soon swept the United States and spread all over the world. In the 1980s, the Spahn brothers established the world's first "Yuan Express" store, continued to sell products with "yellow smiley faces" and continued to develop chain stores. In 2000, they sold the Dollar Express chain to Dollar Tree Stores for $50 million.
