More simplicity Nissan may use a new trademark and sports car Z logo

Recently, Nissan has submitted trademark registration applications in many countries. The new logo, registered in the United Kingdom, Peru, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina, is more simple and no longer uses the simulated chrome appearance and three-dimensional appearance of the existing company logo.

Instead, the presumed new Nissan logo will be two-dimensional and monochromatic, with the company name's sans-serif font surrounded by delicate arcs at the top and bottom. The new logo retains the central frame and circular appearance, but is significantly different from the current larger logo. It recalls efforts by BMW and other automakers to modernize their image using simpler, cleaner forms, although we think Nissan's graphics are better crafted than BMW's.

When the Nissan Ariya concept car was unveiled at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, we actually got a first look at the new car logo. The electric crossover's badge almost exactly matches the new one, leading us to believe this will be Nissan's new corporate logo that will be used in the near future.

According to trademark filings in Canada and New Zealand, the next-generation Nissan Z may also get a new logo. However, unlike current Nissan logos, the Z will clearly look back to history for its logo. Instead of the samurai-style Z slash currently used on sports cars, the new logo will feature a serif font "Z" with a lace in the middle, almost identical to the original 1971 240Z's logo.

We sincerely hope that the new logo also means that the Z will have a retro style. The current car's boomerang-shaped lighting elements and extra-wide rear haunches, which look dated, will return to a simpler, purer form in the new Z model.

The next-generation Nissan sports car may debut in a year or two (with both new logos), but hopefully sooner.
