Historical Development
1. Long after the Taiyi clan existed in the Renhuang era, when it was passed to Emperor Yao, there was a chief named Fan Shu around 2000 BC. Zhongwen went to the imperial capital Tunqiu (now Qingfeng, Henan) to participate in the deposed emperor and established Yao as emperor. Fan Zhongwen, a minister of Yao, was later granted the title of king in the southwest of Shandong Province. During the Xia and Shang Dynasties, he moved to the southeast of Chang'an, Shaanxi Province. Later, there was the Fan Zhong family.
2. It is said that after the Fuxi family, a man named Houzhao settled in the upper reaches of the Bashui River in eastern Sichuan. His descendants took the name of Bashui as Ba. Later, there was a descendant of the Bashi family named Gu Xiang. The five sons are divided into five surnames, among which the surname Fan from Bajun originated.
3. Emperor Ku of the Gaoxin family had a female concubine named Panhu, who gave birth to six boys and six girls. They later married each other and gave birth to six surnames. Among them, the surname Fan from Wulingnan County originated.
4. After Emperor Zhuanxu, Boyi was given the surname Ying by Emperor Shun because of his contribution to assisting Dayu in controlling floods. According to archaeological discoveries, there was ancient Fan City on the bank of Shihe River south of Pingqiao Town in Xinyang, Henan Province, and the tomb of the ancient Fan State with the surname Ying appeared.
5. It is said that the Fan surname in Shaanxi was after Emperor Yan. During the reign of Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty, there was Fan Zhongzi, and during the Sixteen Kingdoms, there were Fan Shi and other clans with the Fan surname.
6. The surname Fan originated from the surname Ji and was formed in the Western Zhou Dynasty. Emperor Yan is the ancestor of the tribe surnamed Jiang, named Shennong; Huangdi is the ancestor of the tribe surnamed Ji, named Xuanyuan. Judging from the descendants of the two emperors, it is said that Emperor Yan only had the surname Jiang, while Emperor Huang is said to have had 25 sons, which later developed into 25 clans, divided into 12 surnames: Ji, You, Qi, Ji, Teng, Zhen, Ren, 仼, Xun, Xi (xi), Ji (ji), Xuan (xuan), and Yi.
Among these 12 tribes, only "Canglin" and "Qingyang" share the same Huangdi surname Ji, and the surname Fan is derived from the surname Ji. The Ji surname was passed down to the great-great-grandson of King Zhou Tai, Yu Zhong, and his grandson Zhongshanfu was granted a title by King Zhou Xuan to establish the Fan Kingdom in the southwest of Jiyuan, Henan, under the jurisdiction of King Zhou Cheng's capital Luoyang. Later, there was a branch with the surname Fan originating from Zhongshanfu.
