Bing Dwen Dwen is the mascot of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. It combines the image of a panda with an ice crystal shell rich in super energy. The shape of the head shell is taken from an ice and snow sports helmet, decorated with a colorful halo. The overall image resembles an astronaut, symbolizing the strong body, tenacity and inspiring Olympic spirit of Winter Olympic athletes. It was officially unveiled on September 17, 2019.
Determining the process
On August 8, 2018, the launching ceremony for the global collection of mascots for the Beijing Winter Olympics and Winter Paralympics was held.
On October 20, 2018, the global collection of mascot design plans entered the submission stage. The collection lasted for 84 days, and 5,816 design plans were received.
From January 7th to 8th, 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee organized an expert review committee to conduct preliminary evaluation and re-evaluation of all valid mascot entries. On April 12, 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee invited national, Beijing and Hebei Provincial People’s Congress deputies, members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, representatives of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, the All-China Women’s Federation, and the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, as well as athletes, college, middle and primary school students and related Representatives from enterprises and other sectors of society will comment on the design plan. In early June and early July 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee entrusted the State Administration for Market Regulation and the Trademark Office of the State Intellectual Property Office to conduct plagiarism checks on candidate plans and mascot names. In late June 2019, the International Olympic Committee, International The Paralympic Committee launched an international plagiarism check on two groups of mascot candidates. In August 2019, the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee reported the mascot candidate plan to the Beijing Winter Olympics Leading Group and determined the final plan.
On the evening of September 17, 2019, BingDwenDwen was officially released to the public.
