The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a stakeholder-owned system whose purpose is to promote responsible global forest management. It provides standard setting, trademark guarantee, certification services and market access for companies and organizations interested in forest management.
The principles and standards of FSC are completed by its members through voting at the highest decision-making body-the General Assembly. Everyone who cares about the fate of the world's forests can apply to become a member of FSC and express their opinions.
Experts from the International Center are responsible for formulating FSC policies and standards, all of which are based on FSC principles and standards and require at least two rounds of public consultation. Members vote to decide which rules need to be further developed or improved, and finally decide which rules to adopt through their representatives on the FSC board of directors.
Types of FSC certification
One is ForestManagement certification, English forest management, abbreviated as FM
FM certification is applicable to all forests, including natural forests, artificial forests and ecological forests used to protect the ecological environment, as well as private forests, state-owned forests, community-owned forests, public-private partnerships, ethnic minority-owned forests and other forms of ownership.
The other is Chain-of- custody certification, which is chain-of-custody chain in English and CoC in abbreviation.
CoC certification is mainly applicable to processing enterprises that directly or indirectly use wood as raw materials. Industries that directly use wood as raw materials include various board factories, flooring factories, pulp mills and some furniture factories, while industries that indirectly use wood as raw materials include some furniture factories, furniture assembly factories, wooden toy factories and paper mills.
The basic requirement of CoC certification is that the raw materials used directly or indirectly come from well-managed forests, that is, forests certified by FSC: FM. For example, if a furniture assembly factory wants to obtain CoC certification, the components must be CoC certified products; In order to obtain CoC certification, components must be CoC-certified products.
The board of directors must obtain CoC certification, provided that its logs come from forests that have obtained FM certification. All these links are indispensable and form a chain effect, so it is called chain operation.
