Shanghai Botanical Garden is located at No.3888 Chenhua Highway, Songjiang District, Shanghai. It is located in Sheshan National Tourism Resort and opened to the public on January 23rd, 211. Covering an area of 2,76,3 square meters, it is the largest botanical garden in East China. The Botanical Garden was established by the Shanghai Municipal Government in cooperation with China Academy of Sciences, State Forestry Administration and Chinese Academy of Forestry. It is a comprehensive botanical garden integrating scientific research, popular science and sightseeing.

Chenshan is one of the Jiu Feng in Songjun County (known as "Jiu Feng in the Clouds" in Shanghai Toponymy), belonging to Sheshan Mountain System, with an altitude of about 7 meters. According to the records of Dong Qichang in the Ming Dynasty, Chenshan is "in the southeast of the mountains, second only to Chenwei", hence its name. In the 2th century, due to quarrying, the south slope of the mountain has been cut off. In the design of the botanical garden, this part was transformed into a mine garden.
